In a position with a view, on the lower slopes of the morainic amphitheatre, 5kms from the Garda Lake, Lonato del Garda offers a splendid perspective that dominates the lake and the plain of Brescia. A city rich in monuments, incredible for the conservation of it’s ancient quarters or so-called “borghi”, Lonato has uncertain origins and linguistic roots of the place name, but the reference to the marshes that must have surrounded the town in the past seem certain. The name of the town would thus indicate a place in the middle of the "lone", that is, marshes. The first mention of Lonato is found in documents from the tenth century, but it is certain that human settlements must have been present in the region even from the first Bronze Age. This lovely location is not only perfect for lakeside holidays, but also satisfies any other interests, with it’s beautiful beach, welcoming hospitality, excellent cuisine and modern facilities, only 4 kilometers from Desenzano, and equally nearby is the important prehistoric spa of Polada.
Today visitors to the town can still find interesting traces of the local history: firstly the sixteenth century Torre civica, the beautiful eighteenth-century basilica in Baroque style, with the wonderful dome by Soratini, and also, the impressive fortress, superb testimony of the long dominion of the Republic of Venice, and home to the Casa del Podestà, to the Ugo da Como Foundation, as well as to the Civic Museum of Ornithology, and, finally the Roman kilns, a crafts complex dating back to the second and first centuries BC.
To visit: Duomo di S. Giovanni Battista – Pieve Romanica di S. Zeno - Rocca e Museo Civico Ornitologico – Casa del Podestà (Fondazione Ugo da Como) – Torre Civica – Fornace Romana
