Just 15 minutes by train from Lake Garda, Brescia is located in an extremely favourable location between the hills, lakes and vast plains, which has made it the second largest city in Lombardy in population and economic importance. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, Brescia has always been a prestigious centre: after the Ligurians, Etruscans and Celts, the Romans turned it into an important Roman city with the name of Brixia. The Lombards in one of their most influential dukedoms thanks to King Desiderio and Venice promoted it to the highest level of cultural centre. History has left astonishing monuments in a quadrilateral of beauty - the archaeological area of the Roman Forum, the Lombard monastery of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia, the Broletto, the Rotunda, the Lodge and the Castle - and works by famous artists such as Foppa, Romanino, Moretto and Savoldo which enrich the churches and museums. Brescia is a city of art offering great opportunities for tourists, with streets, squares and theatres that offer hospitality and big events: the Mille Miglia race, the International Piano festival, the Opera Festival, the White Night of Culture, Brescia con Gusto wine and food festival, to name just a few of the many events that characterise the fine programme on offer throughout the year. Brescia is a constant surprise: it offers the visitor the pleasure and charm of walking through beautiful squares, arcades and palaces to reach one of the largest Roman archaeological sites in northern Italy, with the Capitolium temple, the Santuario church, the Roman theatre, the domus and one of the major Italian museum complexes, Santa-Giulia City Museum, registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
